Bailey Branches

The Bailey's are in my husband's line - and are one of the most interesting as there is a convicted witch. Fortunately they were in New Haven, CT instead of Salem, MA. The transcript of her court appearances came from "Ancient Town Records Vol. I; New Haven Town Records 1649-1662" Edited by Franklin Bowditch Dexter; Printed for the New Haven Colony Historical Society, 1917 and begin on Page 245 for June-July 1655. Fascinating reading! Descendants of this family brought the first elephant to the continent and were involved in early circuses. Although not a Bailey by blood, the co-founder of the Barnum and Bailey Circus lived with a Bailey family and took their surname.

A great deal of the information on the family comes "Genealogical Record of the Descendants of James Bailey ~ Levi Bailey in Westchester and Putnam Counties, New York" published 1948 by the Bailey Association, compiled by George A. Taft and was referenced by the North Salem Town Historian. I've also found it available from http://www.higginsonbooks.com/b.htm. Another source was Boston Transcript, July 1, 1932, Note 2434, Early Families of Eastchester, N.Y. Part XXVI. BAYLY.

Our Bailey's begin with Nicholas Bailey, an older brother of John Bailey of Jamaica, L.I. and of Elias Bailey of Newtown, L.I. according to our source. Born about 1610, he's probably the "Nick Baly" who took the oath of fidelity at New Haven, Conn., July 1, 1644. It is his wife, Margaret, who was convicted of witchcraft in 1655. The sentence of the court was that the Baileys must move away or give sufficient security for the Court's satisfaction for their good behaviour (in the amount of 50 pounds.) We find them the following year living in Peter Stuyvesant's colony at Oostdorp (Westchester, New York.)

Their son, Nathan, was born about 1642, and received land in Westchester in 1666 and is listed a freeholder 1686.

Nathan's son, Nathaniel, was born about 1675, who married first Ruth Galpin (Gilpin), then Leah Devoe (Deveaux), widow of John Vincent and Peter Gedren. Nathaniel took the oath of allegiance in 1698.

Nathaniel and Leah's son, Levi, was born in Rye, Westchester county about 1716. He married Jane Gilchrist. The will of Levi Bailey - probated 26 Oct, 1786, provided considerable information.

Levi's son, Gilbert, born 16 Sep 1759 in Rye, Westchester, married Sarah Field (whose line we have back to Robert DEL FELD in 1240.)

Their son, Joseph Bailey, born 23 September 1780 in North Salem, Westchester, married Rachel Delevan, daughter of Nathan Delevan and Hanna Vail. For more information on the Vail line, see Robert Vail's FTM pages. Would appreciate any info on the Delevan line.

Their daughter, Belinda Bailey, born about 1816, married Harrison Byington.
